New Communications Company to Attend Inuvik Petroleum Show
Friday, June 6, 2008
A new northern communications company will be introducing itself to industry players and community members at the 8th annual Inuvik Petroleum Show this week. Representatives of Tundra Communications will attend the show and share information about the new company.
Tundra Communications is the result of a partnership between the Inuvialuit Development Corporation (IDC) and Northwestel. The new joint venture was formed to provide a wide range of reliable top-tier telecommunications services in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region (ISR). The company will support various sectors of the economy operating in the ISR, in particular natural resource companies.
"We are very pleased to partner with Northwestel to form this new Inuvialuit company," said Wayne Gordon, IDC Chair. "The presence of Tundra Communications in the northern marketplace will ensure that a fair share of the economic benefits from natural resource industries remain in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region and in the North."
"The formation of Tundra Communications is closely tied to Northwestel's five-year strategic plan," said Mark Walker, Northwestel Vice President Business Development. "It addresses our focus on customers because it meets the specific needs of a unique group of customers. Northwestel has the expertise and experience to assist the Inuvialuit in providing telecommunications solutions for customers operating on their land."
Under the terms of the partnership, the IDC provides local business support and a large pool of skilled beneficiaries whom the new company may employ. Northwestel provides the telecommunications infrastructure and a large team of experienced professionals and technical staff to support the delivery of the required telecommunication services.
Created as the business investment arm of Inuvialuit Regional Corporation, Inuvialuit Development Corporation has interests in key businesses servicing Northern Canada in sectors including transportation, oil and gas services, construction, hospitality and property management.
Northwestel provides complete telecommunications solutions for the 110,000 residents of the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Yukon and northern British Columbia. The company's operations span nearly 4 million square kilometres of the most remote and rugged areas of Canada.
